Bharathidasan University
Bharathidasan University established in February 1982, and was named after the great revolutionary Tamil Poet, Bharathidasan (1891-1968). The motto of the University "We will create a brave new world". The University endeavours to be true to such a vision by creating in the region a brave new world of academic innovation for social change".

The affiliating jurisdiction is over 7 Districts with 104 Arts & Science and Fine Arts Colleges and 13 Approved Institutions. Eighteen of the affiliated colleges are autonomous. Among the affiliated colleges, more than 50% are offering PG programmes and 25% are offering M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes. A good number of them are nationally recognized for quality education. The programmes offered through affiliated colleges are so diversified that they number more than 250. The student strength in the affiliated colleges is over 1.50 lakhs.

Bharathidasan University - Business Development Centre (BDU - BDC)
In consonance with the current view that Institutions of Higher Learning should open out to global competition and move towards self-sustenance through external cash flow; an independent unit called Bharathidasan University Business Development Centre (BDU-BDC) was established.

In the last three decades, significant changes have been brought into Research and Development in Universities of India. Not only did the Universities look for greater generation of funding resources to sustain their research activities as funding from Government sources have become significantly dwindled, but also the Universities have been motivated towards the service of the society around them. Consequently, the researchers have been forced to “sell” their knowledge and research outputs through consultancy and transfer of technologies, which they have developed, to the needy industries. At the same time, this provided an avenue for taking scientific developments to the society. Since the individual scientists did not have the required time and expertise to facilitate the above activities, an organisational set-up was mandatorily required. In Bharathidasan University this was taken care by the Business Development Centre (BDU-BDC) during the year 2002.

Within this span of nine years the BDC has facilitated with many reputed Industries / Institutions to sign the MoU with the University on various aspects.

Center for Distance Education - CDE

The Centre for Distance Education (CDE) of Bharathidasan University (BDU) was established in the year 1992, originally intended to cater to the students of the University area who could not enter the regular colleges for higher studies. Subsequently, the area of Centre for Distance Education was extended to cover all over India.

Besides the conventional programmes the Centre for Distance Education is offering programmes in Computer Science and Applications, Information Technology, E-Commerce, Bank Management, Financial Management, Co-Operation, Library and Information Science, Animation etc. The lab-oriented programmes are meticulously planned and executed with same vigor of regular programmes, with no compromise on the practical requirements.

The Centre for Distance Education conducts the theory and practical classes on Saturdays and Sundays. The conduct of the programmes are strictly monitored by the Centre for Distance Education Staff and the Director through regular visit to the Study Centres.

SMOT School of Business will function as one of the Study Centres for CDE, Bharathidasan University offering 2 year MBA program.
