Students life in SMOT is planned to be transformative, invigorative and wholesome. They have a clearly defined academic life right from day 1. Set to the theme “Be the Architect for a Resurgent India”, students are taken for an out bound program, a place that is away from the usual noise of a city. Lasting for four days, the program is distinctively different with treats that range from visual to sensual.
Learning in SMOT is guided by the philosophy that it should be student centric and responsive. Methodology adopted during the first two terms is different from that of the final two terms.
Terms 1 and 2, called foundation phase, is where we get opportunity to undergo professional counselling to identify strengths and weaknesses, different levels of language learning, host of special lectures on business and CEO talks. Set to a combination of traditional and modern approach, students involvement in learning ranges from individual presentations to group presentations.
Terms 3 and 4 present a different challenge to the students. In this phase, all the courses are offered at research level and the faculty transform themselves more as guides rather than teachers. The learning happens through practice and participation under the tutelage of experienced faculty. This phase is very challenging for the students as they make decisions that have far reaching consequences. In term 3 they choose the functional specialization and in the final term, they optionally make choice of the career specialization. Students have wide choice of packaging a course of academic activities – internships, projects, field work, doing courses and so on.
Special lectures and CEO talks form an important part of academic life for the students in SMOT. These are arranged continuously throughout the year with the objective of giving exposure to some of the knowledge which are not generally covered in the courses. Apart from coming to direct contact with personalities who have made significant contribution through their achievements, students get to understand the simplicity with which they deal with topics.
It is often the small things that make a world of difference in a person’s life. Management as a subject often talks about them, but ironically while implementing, we tend to ignore these seemingly small management principles. But here at SMOT, a few of these small yet significant principles are a part of the our culture.
Chill Out sessions that happen at the end of every month, are one of the most awaited time at SMOT. This is the time when the students really go ga-ga, freely talking about anything – lighter moments in the class, about the professors, about the courses, hard moments, issues and what not. Chill Out sometimes includes going to movies and then spending sometime on critiquing the movies too. Beach Run and occasionally some sports add a lot of flavour to the Chill Out we fondly look for.
Whistle blowing is one of the major issues that concern any organization. SMOT has a system in place to address this issue. We have a feedback session at the end of every month, where any issue related to the student life at SMOT is discussed and possibly addressed.
Appreciating someone not only boosts his / her confidence but also encourages performing even better at work. It creates a harmonious environment among the student community. Appreciating each other, even for little things, is a part of the culture in SMOT.
Committee activities are part and parcel of student life in SMOT. Academic, Admissions, Placement, Cultural, IT, Facilities, Sports and Food are some of the committees where students play active role. Apart from the committees, students also have well organized Students’ Council headed by Student President and other office members.
Visit to tea shops, occasionally skipping lunch and venturing out to nearby jaunts for freak out and playing street cricket add a lot of flavour to the life leaving lasting memories. While on the one hand, academic life is demanding with assignments, presentations, projects, deadlines, preparations for placement activity etc.. students on the other hand feel quiet at ease with doing all of them effortlessly. Supportive Culture is the one that SMOT is trying to nurture. No one should be left out for want of support. This is the theme of Mutual Appreciation.
Life in SMOT is incomplete without connectivity. All the students are connected though Black Berry providing any where and any time connectivity accessing mails from administration and faculty instantaneously and respond to them immediately.
